When you want a movie similar to the one you just watched, it makes sense to start by trying to find other films from the same genre. It’s easy to define genres such as ‘crime,’ ‘romance,’ or ‘science fiction. But how about titles like ‘psychological thriller’? Are these more than just sub-genres?

Grouping movies by genre lets you find similar films. In this article, we look at the main genres and also some sub-genres

 

The first thing to remember is that many different genres, subgenres, and even sub-subgenres. The most common genres are:

Romance – Films about love and relationships

Comedy – Films with jokes or humor to make you laugh

Drama – Serious films about actual life events or people’s emotions

Thriller – Suspenseful stories of crime and danger (often scary!)

Action – Exciting adventures where the hero has to overcome challenges

Sci-fi – Stories set in the future with advanced technology or science fiction elements (robots, aliens, etc.) Fantasy is similar but usually involves magic instead of technology. Horror movies are often scary, but they can also be funny if they try not to take themselves too seriously!

War/Westerns show battles between two sides, either with guns or horses

Sports movies tell the story of one team winning against another group

Documentaries cover subjects like history & science through interviews with experts & reenactments instead of fictional characters

 Superheroes are comic book heroes like Batman & Superman who fight bad guys regularly.
