11 Video Types About Music For Artists

Why Should You Create More Than One Music Video for Your One Song?

Hey!  Music for artists only, what if I suggest that you need to produce more than one type of music video for your one song? You might say, “Nah, I already have one music video for my song. I am good. Thank you for suggesting.” Think again. An additional music video like a lyric video is an extra income earned apart from the music video. Got your attention! Good. When you’re in the music business, you’re there to make money out of your music. Why would you want to settle with just one music video when you can make more money?

Coldplay – British Rock Band

Many of you already know Coldplay, and I will spare you the details. If you have never heard of them, Coldplay is a British rock band formed in London in 1996. In this article, I chose Coldplay because they have a variety of music videos for just one song called Higher Power, and I want to use this song as an example of how they did.

Higher Power’s 5 Types of Music Videos:

Be sure to check all five types of music videos. You don’t have to like their song but to get some ideas by watching their five music videos. Oh, there’s one more video, but it is not considered one of the music video types. But it’s worth mentioning. Check it out also.

Hardcore fans would love to watch behind-the-scenes for the Higher Power song.

You saw all five music video types of the same song. Coldplay did it; why can’t you?

Now, you probably are so eager to find out how many types of music videos are out there? There are eleven music video types out there.

Eleven Music Video Types

There are eleven video types:

  • Acoustic
  • Animated
  • Audio
  • Cover (worthy note)
  • Dance
  • Lyric
  • Music Video (traditional)
  • Performance
  • Remix
  • Rhythm
  • Sign

It is a worthy note to mention here, but it is not considered one of the music video types.

  • Behind The Scenes

The Behind-The-Scenes video is considered a documentary film.

I will explain each type of music video in a minute. After reviewing the list of music video types, you’re probably overwhelmed, especially with the video production cost or which type you should start with first. Keep that in mind; when your team makes a music video, you don’t need to do it all at once. You can gradually add a video type over time and see where it best fits. One music video type at a time is all you need.

This article will not detail video production cost, process, or strategy for each type. I only want to list out music video types and explain each class with an example of a music video.

Imagine having all eleven music video types for your one song. Fans will never get bored listening to the same song repeatedly on the radio or apps like Spotify or IHeartRadio.  But will they get bored watching the same music video over and over again? Who knows. Some will and some will not. Fans will always appreciate the variety of your music videos, and they will love to watch a different type of music video with the same song.

Ok, ok, ok. I lied. I promised you I would not explain which music video type you should start first? What the heck? I will tell you a bit anyway and give you a better insight. For example, if you are unsure if your song will be a big hit, start with a lyric video, the most inexpensive way to produce a lyric video. How about an audio video?  You and your band already have a song in an audio format, right?  Then put the audio of your song and album cover art together to produce an MP4 video.

It is your safest way to find out how the world is responding to your song because why spend a lot more money-making an expensive music video with sets and casting if the song isn’t a hit!  After all, you would waste your money and resources.

Alright, artists, I will go ahead and explain each video type and provide you with the link of each music video type by several different music artists.

  • Official Cover Video

This cover video is fantastic!  You and your band should embrace this concept.  You’re making money off of their cover video.  Think about it.  Fans who love your song can’t legally make money from your music. You have copyright protection; you have the right to your theme, and you have the right to your song.  Hence, you make money from your song using someone who covered your piece.  Embrace this.  Let them create their music video using your song/audio in theirs, and you still make money from them.
